I?m pleased to see that we, as pediatricians, are acknowledging the fact that seat of life disease, like many other diseases, actually starts in childhood. And while I fully sustain the screening process, I?m much more partial in prevention. What should we do during that foremost decade of our children?s lives to make the screening needless? It?s all about diet and lifestyle.
For the past thirty years, infant health has been going in the wrong aim. Childhood overweight and obesity has skyrocketed for the time of the past 3 decades. And that trend is in a straight line linked to the increased incidence of a variety of seat of life related disorders in children, most notably lofty blood pressure, metabolic syndrome, and lofty cholesterol levels. This is a very grave problem, given that epidemiologists are proposing that life expectation for this rising generation of children could be shortened by as abundant as eight years. So, what are the primary factors governing to these disturbing trends?
Our reliance on fit foods that are full of additives and sweeten while deficient in nutrients. Our fast paced lifestyle has us purchasing greater degree of fast food, and more prepackaged foods to give food to our families compared to previous generations.
our schools are largely feeding our children prepared, and frequently fried foods, offering minimal fruits and vegetables. Schools likewise rely heavily on snack and soda vending machines for income, at the expense of children?s health.
our children are governing sedentary, technology saturated lifestyles. Through the average child spending about 7 hours using media diurnal (yikes!), our children are being deprived of needed material activity. And schools have severely reduced or eliminated material education in the curriculum.
We need to make more fundamental changes in the way we feed our children. Don?t credit the myth that children don?t need to worry around what they eat until they enlarge older. We have known for years that the roots of seat of life disease begin in childhood. And remember, the habits they unfold in childhood will persist into adulthood, so we deficiency to instill the right habits now. Here?s that which we can do:
Provide our children with a diet lofty in fruits and vegetables. Studies have shown that smooth as early as toddler age, our children?s diets are harshly deficient in fruits and vegetables. It will take creativity given their finicky appetites, but in that place are numerous resources available. Prepare more home cooked meals for our children, so that we can make secure that they are receiving freshly prepared and sound ingredients in their meals. Studies hold shown that children who eat more meals at home hold lower rates of obesity and other soundness problems.
Get our children exercising more. The recommended horizontal of activity is 60 minutes of vigorous action every day. I know it sounds daunting, but equitable getting them outside for free sport will peak their natural inclination to exercise. And we can exercise with them. Remember to create it fun. Playing ball together, family walks, or smooth family P90X.
We often say that we want our children to hold a better life than we have; so let?s bestow them a better legacy of health and longevity!
