UK PM's ex-spin doctor held by cops in perjury case

Facundo Arrizabalaga / EPA, file

Andy Coulson, a former editor of Rupert Murdoch's now-defunct News of the World newspaper, later served as a spin doctor for British Prime Minister David Cameron.

By Alastair Jamieson, msnbc.com

LONDON -- A former spokesman for Britain?s prime minister was?detained by police on Wednesday amid allegations he committed perjury while working as a tabloid editor for Rupert Murdoch ? a move that brings the phone-hacking scandal closer to the heart of government.

Andy Coulson, who worked as David Cameron's director of communications, was held in London by detectives investigating claims he committed perjury during a high-profile court case in Scotland involving a politician accused of taking part in adulterous, drug-fueled sex orgies at swingers' clubs.

Coulson, 44, was being transferred north from London to Glasgow, Scotland, for questioning on Wednesday, according to Britain?s Sky News.

Strathclyde Police issued a statement that said: "Officers from Strathclyde Police's Operation Rubicon team detained a 44-year-old man in London this morning under section 14 of the Criminal Procedure Scotland Act 1995 on suspicion of committing perjury before the High Court in Glasgow."

'War criminal': Tony Blair heckled while testifying about Murdoch links

Coulson resigned from his job as the Cameron?s chief spin doctor in January 2011 amid growing public anger over the phone-hacking scandal.

Prior to working for Cameron, he was editor of the News of the World, the now-defunct Murdoch Sunday tabloid. He resigned from that job in 2007 - also over phone hacking.

Now he is implicated in another long-running saga ? that of Tommy Sheridan, a lawmaker and icon of left-wing Scottish politics.

Coulson gave evidence in a 2010 Glasgow High Court trial at which Sheridan was jailed for three years for lying under oath during his earlier defamation action against the News of the World in 2006, STV News reported.

Tommy Sheridan and his wife Gail make a statement outside the High Court in Glasgow, Scotland, on Dec. 23 2010.

Sheridan had won ?200,000 in damages over an article that said he had committed adultery, visited a swingers' club and taken part in drug-fueled orgies.

Giving evidence at the 2010 trial, Coulson denied being involved in, or aware of, any illegal activities, including phone hacking, the BBC reported.

Earlier this month, Coulson appeared in front of an ongoing inquiry into press standards where he revealed he still held shares in Murdoch?s News Corp. while working as working as Cameron?s director of communications.

Cain Velasquez, Jamie Varner and Glover Teixeira are UFC 146?s three stars

When plans for an all-heavyweight main card at UFC 146 were announced, I was skeptical. While heavyweights can deliver thrilling knockouts, they can also deliver boring wheezefests consisting of two large men pushing at each other. My skepticism was misplaced, because UFC 146 turned out to be one of the best cards of the year. Starting with Mike Brown's return to winning ways and ending with the Junior dos Santos' convincing title defense, this card delivered. But who stood out more than the rest?

No. 1 star -- Cain Velasquez: Losing his title to JDS in just 64 seconds could have messed with Velasquez's head, or it could have motivated him. Judging by the amount of blood that came from Antonio Silva's head (more on that later), Velasquez took the latter route. That dismantling of "Big Foot" propelled Velasquez back into heavyweight title contention.

No. 2 star -- Jamie Varner: Coming into UFC 146, Edson Barboza had 10 straight wins over such fighters as Ross Pearson, Terry Etim and Anthony Njokuani. Coming into UFC 146, Jamie Varner hadn't fought in the UFC for a year and a half. His last three fights? Wins in XFC over Drew Fickett and Nate Jolly and a loss to Dakota Cochrane.

None of that mattered Saturday. Varner, the one-time WEC lightweight champ, was given his chance back at the UFC and stopped the Barboza freight train with unrelenting pressure and a first-round TKO.

No. 3 star -- Glover Teixiera: Visa issues prevented Teixiera from fighting in the U.S. previously. In just one minute, 53 seconds, Teixiera let fans know what we've been missing. He beat up on Kyle Kingsbury, then sunk in an arm-triangle to get the submission win.

Honorable mention -- Blood: The liquid that courses through our veins made quite an appearance on Saturday night. It showed up in Brown's win over Pineda, made cameos in Dan Hardy's knockout of Duane Ludwig and Stipe Miocic's TKO of Shane Del Rosario. But blood truly took its star turn in the Velasquez-Silva bout. There was so. Much. Blood. In the unofficial Cagewriter blood-o-meter, it topped Josh Koscheck's decision over Chris Lytle and Karl Amoussou's submission of John Doyle.

Who were your three stars from Saturday night? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

James Rawles Survival Blog Taken Down by DOS Attack

A reader emailed me to say he had been having trouble getting to Survival Blog in the last day or so and sure enough when I went over there was a message saying they were experiencing a DOS attack and not to reload the page.

In April The Epoch Times was attacked in a similar way and the Chi-Coms were suspected.

Recently Rawles site had several articles about government agencies collecting date and in late 2011 there were several posts which used Occupy as an example of civil unrest and societal breakdown. I suspect the latter is the reason Survival Blog was attacked as I have written about Occupy and Anonymous vindictiveness to even mild criticism.

BIG BIG TRAIN The Underfall Yard music review by Warthur

3 stars Big Big Train's The Underfall Yard seems to get a lot of plaudits from the prog crowd but personally I don't see the appeal. With a few Genesis-isms slipped in here and there (in particular, there's a pinch of Steve Hackett's classic "weeping guitar" sound present), the group I most immediately thought of here was Spock's Beard, particularly when it comes to the use of vocal harmonies. (And what do you know - Nick D'Virgilio was pulling drummer duty in the band during the recording of this album!) Maybe that's the problem - I've never been able to stand Spock's Beard, finding their aesthetic a bit artificial and phony, and The Underfall Yard also feels like a facade to me. Either the band sincerely believe in this tedious Victorian-era nostalgia codswallop, or they don't; if they do they're cranks, if they don't they're just singing about a whole bunch of stuff they don't sincerely buy into, which if anything is worse. Ho hum.

Overcompensating For Hair Loss Can Actually Increase Hair Loss ...

Many hair loss sufferers are more occupied with the fact that this problem affects their daily life than why the condition occurred. It is very easy to understand. In the end, your self image impacts most aspects of your life socially and professionally and we do live in an image-driven culture.

We have a natural tendency to become defensive and over react to nearly anything which threatens our physical appearance. Hair loss is an obvious and severe threat to how we view ourselves. It causes such insecurity many people may feel they have no choice but to overcompensate for the problem. Sadly, they are falling into a trap and making the problem worse.

In 1997, a researcher followed the lives of more than 4300 male hair loss sufferers. The objective of the research would have been to examine areas of their lifestyle which might be causing or accelerating the hair loss. The results were quite interesting.

Compared to men having a full head of hair, these men were 32% more likely to drink over 5 alcoholic drinks each day. They were 151% very likely to smoke cigarettes than men with healthier hair. As a rule, these men were 72% more likely to indulge in dangerous habits like driving aggressively and taking physical risks.

Even more fascinating were the indicators of health within these men. They were 25% prone to suffer a major injury. Even worse, these people were 76% more likely to have a cardiac event.

Consider for a moment the factors which trigger hair loss. Hair loss is a direct result of a hormone imbalance creating a lot of testosterone and too much of the testosterone derivative, DHT. Nearly anything which increases testosterone increases hair loss.

Hormone imbalances occur naturally, but how we care for our body can change a minor imbalance into a significant problem. Smoking and drinking prevents the natural production of enzymes which balance and counteract testosterone. Worse, risky and aggressive behavior forces the brain to signal the introduction of more testosterone in the body.

These men were struggling with too much testosterone, yet lived life styles which promoted more testosterone. Some men accepted they used aggressive behavior to feel more masculine and appealing. Other men acknowledged it as a self-punishment because of their disappointing looks. In most case, a man?s overcompensation for hair loss created an environment for more significant hair loss.

Rather then overcompensating for your problem, why not try to solve it? Why not find a way to reduce testosterone and create a hormonal balance on your body? If that seems like a better solution than attempting to make you feel better mentally, it is time to find out how to achieve this remedy.

One way is to use an in depth program that demonstrates how to counteract hair loss by blocking the source of the problem, DHT. It demonstrates to you a health and fitness program tailored to your body. You?ll learn how to achieve your ideal body form, becoming a picture of health that is DHT free. By the end of the program, you?ll have learned how to stop hair loss and re-grow hair. Most importantly, when you achieve your ideal form and have a thick head of hair, your self image will not be an issue again. There is a little black book that can help you at the least slow down the process of hair loss by using just the methods outlined above.

To get more information on hair loss and how to solve the situation, consider the Hair Loss Black Book by Clicking Here!. For other options, such as the unique Provillus formula, visit www.choose4yourself.com.

Automotive History: Indianapolis 500 Pace Cars ... - Curbside Classic

We are now entering what I consider to be the golden era of Indy Pace Cars.? Although the power and performance of the American automobile had increased substantially by 1954, the second half of the 1950s would showcase the horsepower race in all its glory.

What else could have paced the race in 1955 other than the new Chevrolet.?? Although the industry was full of new models that year, hindsight would surely ratify that the 1955 Chevrolet was perhaps the most culturally significant new car since the 1932 Ford V8.?? Chevrolet Sales Manager, Thomas Keating got to drive the Gypsy Red and India Ivory Bel Air convertible. This photo shows Indianapolis Motor Speedway owner Tony Hulman next to the car.

This car illustrates the rapid advances in engine design taking place during those years.? In 1955, a Chevrolet came to the race with the same horsepower rating (180) and from a smaller displacement as the much more expensive Hemi-powered New Yorker had brought to the race just four years earliers.? And who would have figured that the same basic engine design would still be pacing the race in 2012?

Chevrolet?s famous musical star Dinah Shore got at least one ride around the track.? See the USA in your Chev-ro-let!? The 1955 race itself was marred by the fatal crash involving Bill Vukovich, one of the great (and most popular) racers of the era.

While all the world loves the 1955 Chevy, one of my own faves paced the race the next year.? With this Forward Look 1956 DeSoto, Chrysler Corporation was leading the field of thirty three cars for the third time in six years.? DeSoto Division president Irv Woolson drove the big hemi-powered convertible.? This DeSoto is, to my eye, one of the most attractive Pace Cars of all time.? This photo also shows the Speedway?s old wooden pagoda.? The pagoda was a track fixture, built to house press and?track officials during the race.? This one dated to the 1920s, and would be torn down following the 1956 race, to be replaced by a modern control facility.

The ?56 model is also my favorite DeSoto of the V8 era.? I must not be alone, because DeSoto actually outsold Chrysler that year.? It is hard to imagine that only five years into the future, the DeSoto would join so many others in the museum of dead brands.

The Pace Car got a 341 c.i. hemi V8 from the Adventurer, which was helpful because we were now into an era where the Pace Car would enter the pits at over 100 mph.? The ivory and gold color combination with anodized gold trim on the wheelcovers and elsewhere made for a very attractive car in the estimated 300 ? 500 replicas that were made.? But for some reason, despite the number of replicas out there, there were not many good photos taken at the track.

In 1957, the Ford Motor Company was finally at the track with something other than a flathead.? The 1957 was Mercury?s year, as the brand was finally set to enter the big time.? Mercury would go on to become a perennial contender in the middle priced field for decades to come.? No, wait.? That was the plan.? Actually, Mercury never took root in its new role, and would eventually revert to its traditional role as a Ford with more chrome (or in the 1970s, more Brougham).? But the ?57 model gave it a good try.

This 1957 Turnpike Cruiser was driven by Jack Reith, General Manager of Mercury.? The TC used a 368 c.i. version of the Y block that was normally found in Lincolns.? The pace cars were painted a light yellow called Sun Glitter.? Somewhere in the range of 700-1000 of these convertibles came with Pace Car decal kits.

The actual car was won by Sam Hanks, who announced his retirement from the winners circle, and kept the car for thirty years.? After all, once you have won the Indianapolis 500 and obtained the keys to a new Turnpike Cruiser, what else is there to accomplish in life?? OK, besides getting Lauren Bacall too.? It has been reported that the Turnpike Cruiser convertible was introduced in Indianapolis in January of 1957 when the choice of Pace Car was announced, and that the very first one was the car to pace the race.

1958:?Bonneville comes to Indianapolis.? Bunkie Knudson?s Pontiac Division was turning up the heat in its quest to become General Motors? performance division.? This big Bonneville ragtop was a natural.? This year would be Pontiac?s debut year as the Pace Car.

The big Pontiac 370 V8 with Tri-Power (triple 2 barrel carbs) was easily good for?300 horsepower, a figure that last year?s Mercury could only dream of out of its performance-impaired?Y block.? I will go to my grave wondering how Pontiac got away with the rocket on the side that mimicked that on the 49 Olds, but was bigger in every way.? Oldsmobile?s people must have been steaming about this.

The 1958 model was a one-year-only car, and also marked the final year that the venerable Chief Pontiac?s likeness adorned the exterior of the car (although his silhouette would serve as a high-beam indicator for several more years).? Former racer Sam Hanks would pilot the big Bonnie.?? To me, this is one of the great Pace Car promo photos of all time, taken outside of the old main entrance to the Speedway.

GM was back for a second year in a row with a very different kind of car.? This Buick Electra 225 would also be driven by Sam Hanks.? It is reported that for two or three years during the late 1950s when the Auto Manufacturers Association banned racing activity, the Pace Cars were officially sponsored by local dealers.? This car was jointly sponsored by two Indianapolis area Buick dealers, although we can be sure that there was plenty of unofficial factory support.

The 1959 Pace Car was the first one equipped with a? two-way radio in response to a multiple-car first lap accident in 1958.? The white Electra 225 convertible sported red bucket seats and loads of options.?? The big Electra 225 used the Buick nailhead 401 V8 which was rated at 325 horsepower, nearly double the standard 165 horsepower of the Pace Car Chevrolet of five years earlier, and about triple that of the 1950 Mercury that started the decade.

This Pace Car was won by Rodger Ward, and was reportedly one of the last cars to be driven as everyday transportation following the race.?? The eventual disposition of the 1959 Pace Car is a mystery, but if you have the time, you can check out one man?s exhaustive (and fascinating) search to determine whether his white ?59 Buick bucket seat convertible is THE actual Official Pace Car (here).

When I was a kid, my friend Tim?s dad had a framed color picture of the start of the 1959 race which hung on the wall of the family?s basement.? That picture of the thirty three cars led by this fast, angry Buick is the picture that comes to my mind at the start of every years race.

Next time, we will move into the sizzling ?60s.

Gareth Deaves, Guinness World Records gaming editor | What's ...

We often use vague catchall words to describe careers in gaming: developer, designer, producer. But those words don?t tell much of a story. What?s Your Line? is an interview series designed to demystify the people who make their living in games.

Fact: Gameological Society editor John Teti is a world record breaker. In 2010, he racked up 10,290 Xbox Live Gamerscore points in just 24 hours, a feat that made it into the Guinness World Records Gamer?s Edition. The Gamer?s Edition was launched as a spinoff of the original book in 2008. It?s packed with more than just high-scores and speed runs?ever wondered just how big the world?s biggest controller is, who?s the oldest beat-em-up fighter, or which is the most illegally downloaded game*?

Gareth Deaves has. As the gaming editor at Guinness World Records, it?s his job to know the answers to these questions. He took a break from working on the sixth edition of the Gamer?s book to tell The Gameological Society about why he got involved, how the book is put together, and what it takes to be a record breaker.

(Full disclosure: the author of this article is also a record breaker, holding the title of longest-serving contributor to the Gamers? Edition. Also: John?s record has since been broken by a Canadian called Jason.)

The Gameological Society: How did you become the gaming editor for Guinness World Records? Have you always been a gamer?

Gareth Deaves: Absolutely, yes. I always owned just about every video games console, and I still spend way too much time gaming. I came into the industry through working in PR agencies and ended up writing games reviews. Then I found out Guinness World Records were looking for someone to research and write rules for new video gaming records. I?ve been in charge of the last three books and we?re just working on the next one. It?s fantastic to be able to work in an industry and with a hobby that I enjoy so much.

Largest collection of Marios

The world?s largest collection of Mario memorabilia, assembled by Mitsugu Kikai.

Gameological: Would you describe yourself as a competitive gamer? Have you always been into getting high scores and breaking records?

Deaves: I?m the kind of person who will have 10 or 11 games on the go at the same time?one on each platform and a couple on my phone. I?m more of an ADD gamer rather than an OCD gamer. The OCD guys are the kind of guys who tend to apply to us here, saying, ?I?ve got this amazing thing I can do on such-and-such a game.? They?ve focused on that and practiced, and they?ve gotten really good at one particular thing. One thing that came in this morning, actually, is someone who?s aiming for a kill screen on Donkey Kong on the NES. Donkey Kong is a very well-known as a high-score-chasing arcade game, due to the King Of Kong movie. It turns out there?s actually a kill screen on the NES version as well, which no one has ever managed to get to.

Gameological: If nobody?s ever been able to reach that screen, how does anyone know it exists?

Deaves: They run it in emulators, and it?s been reached through tool-assisted runs. That?s where your gameplay inputs are recorded, and you can reverse, like in the Prince Of Persia games. So you can record a perfect run where you don?t die at any point. In the NES version of Donkey Kong, once you get to the 122nd level, the whole game breaks. It?s been done tool-assisted, but never by a human. In contrast, the arcade game breaks at level 22. That gives you an idea of how insanely hard it is for the guy who thinks he will be able to get it in public. And that?s pretty exciting for guys like me.

Gameological: What was the thinking behind the decision to launch a gamer?s version of the Guinness Book Of Records?

Deaves: Everyone we spoke to who loved the Guinness World Records books loved video gaming. Some of them also loved sport, or movies, or natural sciences, but they all loved video gaming. So it came about as a celebration of all the awesome stuff that?s happened in video gaming over the last 12 months. We sell roughly half a million copies every year, which is a phenomenal achievement considering it?s said people aren?t spending enough money on video games now. I think it?s a cool thing for people to have lying around on their coffee table. I?ve heard people call it the best toilet book for a gamer.

Gameological: You should put that on the front cover.

Deaves: We?ve had discussions about it, but it hasn?t been approved just yet.

Gameological: It?s not just high scores that feature in the book.

Deaves: No, it?s anything that can be counted or measured about gaming. The fastest-selling, best-selling, most critically acclaimed, number of characters or levels or guns?that last one is held by Borderlands, because of the possible combinations there. We did actually count them.

Gameological: How do you come up with ideas for records?

Deaves: Sometimes people will approach us. Fan communities are a huge source of input. Likewise, we?ll go out and talk to publishers and developers. I think the weirdest one was someone who wanted to take World Of Warcraft: The Frozen Throne completely seriously by playing it in a block of ice. We rejected it on the basis that it was a little specific. We do have endurance records for all kinds of games?people staying up for very long periods of time playing video games, that kind of stuff. It?s not something that?s ever been a problem. People will do this stuff whether or not we monitor it. Our role is to see what?s going on out there and tell everyone about it. The frozen throne was probably the silliest. We do get the occasional ?I want to play Halo in my underpants? and those kind of things.

Gameological: Why reject that one?

Deaves: There?s nothing wrong with playing Halo in your underpants, but you?d have to beat the overall Halo record. We don?t care what you?re wearing.

World's Largest Game Controller

Ben Allen created the world?s largest working NES controller.

Gameological: What?s your favorite record in the book?

Deaves: In the 2012 book, it has to be the record set by a guy called Jesse Moerkerk from the Netherlands. He?s an enormous guy, about six-foot-five and probably 19 stone [266 pounds], with a Dutch beard. He played Super Mario Galaxy 2 in one of those vertical sky-diving wind tunnels. He managed to get through most of the first world and beat the first boss. It took him about 18 minutes. It was incredible to watch the level of skill required, him hovering in the air with the Wii remote fluttering in his hands. He looked absolutely exhausted when he came out. He said it was like doing one continuous press-up the entire time.

Gameological: Would you say he?s a typical Guinness World Record breaker? Do you find they tend to have a particular mentality or personality type?

Deaves: It varies. Some of the most impressive records have been done by one person with bloody-minded determination. Or small groups of gamers, five or six guys who?ve played together for years. Another great example is the handheld game console party?over a thousand people playing Mario Kart together. That?s one of the most positive faces of gaming for me, and I really like that we?re able to be a part of that.

Gameological: What about when things go wrong? What happens when you go to watch a person try to achieve this goal they?ve spent years practicing for, and they fail?

Deaves: It?s incredibly awkward. As Guinness World Records, we have to remain impartial. We have to make sure the rules are stuck to at all times, otherwise the record doesn?t have any value the next time it?s attempted. I have had to reject many records during my career. It never gets any easier.

Gameological: Do you commiserate, or do you just walk away, professional and stony-faced?

Deaves: It?s more of the second one. If the person is already at the fail stage there?s nothing I can do, so it?s often best to step away. It?s harsh, but if they?re attempting the record, they?ve got the right kind of support around them. They?ve got their friends and family there. They?d much rather be talking to them than dealing with some guy from Guinness World Records.

Gameological: How do you get to be a Guinness World Records adjudicator?

Deaves: They usually start off as record managers, like I did. Record managers research and approve records?they check out the evidence, interview witnesses, review video footage and so on. We have very strict rules in place, and if there are any doubts the record will be rejected. The onus is on the people attempting the record to make sure everything about it is proven.

Gameological: What?s a typical day in the office like? I imagine you come into work to find the world?s tallest man sitting in reception, the world?s most tattooed lady coming out of the loo.

Deaves: We did have the world?s loudest burper in this morning, Paul Hunn. His burp really sounds nothing like a burp at all, but we?re confident he?s not just shouting.

Longest gaming session played in a state of freefall

Jesse Moerkerk holds the record for ?longest gaming session in indoor freefall.?

Gameological: How do you know he?s the world?s loudest burper?

Deaves: We have a decibel meter in the office. We have very strict guidelines for how far from the floor it has to be, how far away from it he?s allowed to stand. We set it up in a soundproof room.

Gameological: So it?s not just parked between the photocopier and the fax machine?

Deaves: No. Today he was coming in for a meeting, and he couldn?t resist having a quick belch because that?s his thing. He needs to stay in shape. It takes a lot to shock the guys in this office. A very loud burper is probably a raised eyebrow at best. Much more exciting for me is when our gaming record holders come in. During the book launch we had Sami Cetin, the Mario Kart world record holder. He?s a fantastic guy, an incredible self-publicist and a very committed gamer. I once went six rounds with Ryan Hart, the Street Fighter record holder. It was like being in a cage with a bear. He wouldn?t let up at all. When I picked up the controller I thought, ?You know what? Every dog has his day. Maybe I?ll get a few hits in on Ryan Hart.? It was embarrassing that I?d even thought that. It was horrible.

Gameological: Did you actually try to play Street Fighter properly or did you just press all the buttons really fast? That?s a technique I?ve had some success with myself.

Deaves: I did have a crack at that. The unpredictability does help to rattle some pro players. But the mistakes I made were so heavily punished that it became non-functional pretty quickly.

Gameological: You?ve met a lot of video game record breakers. What conclusions have you come to about what motivates them?

Deaves: I?ve found that most of the very successful gamers connect with the gameplay features of a particular game. Like Sami with Mario Kart. There will be something about the physical act of controlling that world they find completely compelling, so that it excludes a lot of other things they might be interested in. For example, if you want to catch Sami Cetin in public any time soon, head down to Nintendisco, the gaming club night in London. You won?t find Sami at the bar or hanging around talking to people, but playing Mario Kart on the big screen. He?s a pretty popular guy down there, and I think that?s why he keeps coming back.

Meeting the best gamers in the world is the best thing about my job. As someone who?s played video games [my] whole life, these guys are heroes to me. There?s still a stigma about gaming in some circles, and I?m proud I can give these guys the respect they deserve.

Gameological: What would you say to someone who thinks they have what it takes to become a record breaker? What do they need to do?

Deaves: Get creative. Think of something that?s cool, that?s difficult, that no one has done before. Then make sure you can get really, really good at it. Guys like Sami Cetin play for hours. I?d guess he?s probably logged 5,000 or 6,000 hours on Mario Kart over the course of his life. Be prepared to fight hard for your record. Don?t be afraid to go a little bit crazy, because there?s a chance you can create a whole new record that other people will compete for later. Just make sure you?re ready to defend it.

* World?s biggest controller: The NES controller created by engineering student Ben Allen, which measures 12? x 5?3? x 1?8.? Oldest beat-?em-up fighter: Superman, who appeared in Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe. Most pirated game: StarCraft II: Wings Of Liberty. All records taken from the Guinness World Records Gamer?s Edition 2012.

Sound Beach | Oolala the Arty Life

When Mama was young her father built his family a summer cottage on the Long Island Sound. The cottage was bare bones simple. Rooms were small, walls were thin, kids all slept up the ladder steep stairs in the unfinished attic.

Sound Beach

There wasn?t a flush toilet until I was five or six. And the bathroom, when it was finally built, wasn?t inside the house. You had to go out through the back door to the little shed attached to the back of the kitchen. Nothing but the basics, the toilet and a sink, but heaven compared to the two seater at the back of the lot.

I dimly recall an outdoor shower but I don?t remember using it much. We spent most all day at the beach and if I was crusty with salt, well, that was all part of summer. Every summer. Along with sunburns and lazy afternoons reading in the hammock, a big canvas thing strung between a couple of trees. There were card games and coloring books and jig saw puzzles. There was no TV.

It. Was. Heaven.

Four generations of family called it home in the summer. Aunts and uncles, grandparents and cousins. We took turns and overlapped. And when the cousins were quasi adults in college and wanted a private place to?entertain, it became the winter weekend no-tell motel.

It?s a wonder we never bumped into each other.

We went to a family reunion there when FirstBorn was a baby. Flew in from California. By this time my grandparents were long gone. But their children, their grandkids and the great grands were all there.

It was the last time we were all together. People moved away. People died. The cottage was empty most of the year, even in summers. Eventually the decision was made to sell it. The new people tore it down and built their own house. A real house, a year round house.

Sound Beach. Our history grew into our vocabulary. When we liked something we said it reminded us of Sound Beach. Norway reminds us of Sound Beach. The narrow country lanes in my part of California are like the narrow roads we drove there. Wicker chairs. Hammocks. Hot summer nights. We were summer people, we never lived there but it was HOME.

This morning I woke up to an email from my sister, the one in Norway. A friend had been visiting Long Island. Armed with the address and Google Earth, she took pictures of the new place on our old property.

It gave me such great pleasure to see the house they built. A home with flower baskets on the front porch. Painted yellow, almost the same color as the cottage. It sits back from the road, with a lawn in the front. It?s well kept and looks comfortable. Looks like family.

Nana would?ve loved it. Mama would?ve loved it. And me? ?I could move right in.

I didn?t think I?d ever want to see the new house. But life is about growth and change. Moving forward. My family shares the memories of a magical place. But we have moved on.

And now it?s time for others to make memories of their own.

Egyptians vote in first free presidential vote

CAIRO (AP) ? After a lifetime of being told who will rule them, Egyptians dove enthusiastically into the uncertainty of the Arab world's first competitive presidential election Wednesday. Up to the last minute, voters wrestled with a polarizing choice between secularists rooted in Hosni Mubarak's old autocracy and Islamists hoping to enfuse the state with religion.

The choices in the race raised worries among many whether real democracy will emerge in Egypt. And the final result, likely to come only after a runoff next month, will only open a new chapter of political struggle.

But in the lines at the polls, voters were palpably excited at the chance to decide their country's path in the vote, which is the fruit of last year's stunning popular revolt that overthew Mubarak after 29 years in power. For the past 60 years, Egypt's presidents running unchallenged have largely been re-affirmed in yes-or-no referendums that few bothered to vote in.

Mohammed Salah, 26, emerged grinning from a poll station, fresh from casting his ballot. "Before, they used to take care of that for me," he said. "Today, I am choosing for myself."

Medhat Ibrahim, 58, who suffers from cancer, had tears in his eyes. "I might die in a matter of months, so I came for my children, so they can live," he said, waiting to vote in a poor Cairo district. "We want to live better, like human beings."

Adding to the drama, this election is up in the air. The reliability of polls is unsure, and four of the 13 candidates candidates have bounced around the top spots, leaving no clear single front-runner. None is likely to win outright in Wednesday and Thursday's balloting, so the top two vote-getters enter a run-off June 16-17, with the victor announced June 21.

The two secular front-runners are both veterans of Mubarak's regime ? former prime minister Ahmed Shafiq and former foreign minister Amr Moussa.

The main Islamist contenders are Mohammed Morsi of the powerful Muslim Brotherhood and Abdel-Moneim Abolfotoh, a moderate Islamist whose inclusive platform has won him the support of some liberals, leftists and minority Christians.

The debate went right up to the doorsteps of schools around the country where polls were set up.

Some voters backed Mubarak-era veterans, believing they can bring stability after months of rising crime, a crumbling economy and bloody riots. Others were horrified by the thought, believing the "feloul" ? or "remnants" of the regime ? will keep Egypt locked in dictatorship and thwart democracy.

Islamists, particularly the Muslim Brotherhood, saw their chance to lead a country where they were repressed for decades and to implement their version of Islamic law. Their critics recoiled, fearing theocracy.

Some saw an alternative to both in a leftist candidate, Hamdeen Sabahi, who has claimed the mantle of Egypt's first president, the populist Gamal Abdel-Nasser.

An Islamist victory, particularly by Morsi, will likely mean a greater emphasis on religion in government. His Muslim Brotherhood, which already dominates parliament, says it won't mimic Saudi Arabia and force women to wear veils or implement harsh punishments like amputations. But it says it does want to implement a more moderate version of Islamic law, which liberals fear will mean limitations on many rights.

Many of the candidates have called for amendments in Egypt's 1979 peace treaty with Israel, which remains deeply unpopular. None is likely to dump it, but a victory by any of the Islamist or leftist candidates in the race could mean strained ties with Israel and a stronger stance in support of the Palestinians in the peace process.

The candidates from the Mubarak's regime ? and, ironically, the Brotherhood, which has already held multiple talks with U.S. officials ? are most likely to maintain the alliance with the United States.

A looming question is whether either side will accept victory by the other. Islamists have warned of new protests if Shafiq wins, which they say can only happen by fraud. Many are convinced the ruling military wants a victory by Shafiq, a former air force commander.

"Over my dead body will Shafiq or Moussa win. Why not just bring back Mubarak?" said Saleh Zeinhom, a merchant backing Abolfotoh. "I'm certain we'll have a bloodbath after the elections cause the military council won't hand power to anyone but Shafiq."

Shafiq was met by several dozen protesters screaming "down with the feloul" as he arrived to vote in an upscale neighborhood east of Cairo. Some protesters showed their contempt by holding up their shoes in his direction.

Shafiq, who was Mubarak's last prime minister until he too was forced out of his post by protests, has been openly disparaging of the pro-democracy youth groups who led the anti-Mubarak uprising. Critics view him as too close to the generals who took over from Mubarak and whose own reputation is tainted by human rights abuses and authoritarian tendencies.

But with his strongman image, he has appealed to Egyptians who crave stability and fear Islamists.

"The country is going under. We need a president that implements justice and brings back security. Bottom line," said Essam el-Khatib, a government employee voting in the Cairo suburb of Maadi.

Nearby another man, Sayed Attiya, shouted, "What Shafiq? We didn't have a revolution to bring back Shafiq!"

The Muslim Brotherhood, meanwhile, faced a backlash of its own.

The group was the biggest winner in parliament elections late last year, winning nearly half the seats. But it disillusioned some by seeming too power hungry, demanding to be allowed to form a government and trying to dominate a panel created to draft a new constitution. The panel was scrapped and the process of writing the vital new charter is on hold as politicians struggle over forming a new one.

The image it has cultivated as an advocate of tolerance and piety was damaged by its campaign to discredit Abolfotoh, who quit the Brotherhood to run for president, and its edict that it is a sin to vote for anyone not advocating implementation of Islamic Shariah law.

Outside a polling station in the village of Ikhsas, outside Cairo, a group of neighbors got into a friendly but frank debate.

"I voted Brotherhood for parliament but I find they are inflexible in their opinions and want to take everything. I can't now find them in the country's top job," Bassem Saber, a 31-year-old accountant dressed in the traditional local robes, told the circle of men. He now backs Abolfotoh.

Khaled el-Zeini, a Brotherhood backer, said people were being unfair.

Fares Kamel, a local trader, interjected with a shout against the Brothers, "We loved them and wanted them but we realized they are all about monopolizing power."

But the group has a powerful electoral machine.

In the Mediterranean city of Alexandria, Brotherhood vans ferried women supporters to the polls in the poor neighborhood of Abu Suleiman, one of the group's strongholds. The women, in headscarves or covered head to toe in black robes and veils that hid their faces, filed into the station.

"I want to give the Brotherhood a chance to rule," said Aida Ibrahim, a veteran Brotherhood member who was helping voters find their station. "If it doesn't work, they will be held accountable," she said.

Some Brotherhood supporters cited the group's years of providing charity to the poor ? including reduced-price meat, and free medical care.

"Whoever fills the tummy gets the vote," said Naima Badawi, a housewife sitting on her doorstep watching voters in Abu Sir, one of the many farming villages near the Pyramids being sucked into Cairo's urban sprawl.

There were only a few reports of overt violations of election rules Wednesday, mainly concerning candidates' backers campaigning near polling stations. Three international monitoring organizations, including the U.S.'s Carter Center, were observing the vote. Former President Jimmy Carter, the center's head, visited a polling station in the ancient Cairo district of Sayeda Aisha.

The election's winner will face a monumental task. The economy has been sliding as the key tourism industry dried up ? though it starting to inch back up. Crime has increased. Labor strikes have proliferated.

And the political turmoil is far from over. The generals who took over from Mubarak have promised to hand authority to the election winner by the end of June. But many fear it will try to maintain a considerable amount of political say. The fundamentals of Mubarak's police state remain in place, including the powerful security forces.

"We will have an elected president but the military is still here and the old regime is not dismantled," said Ahmed Maher, a prominent activist from the group April 6, a key architect of last year's 18-day uprising against Mubarak.

"The pressure will continue," he said. "People have finally woken up. Whoever the next president is, we won't leave him alone."
