ST JOHN?S, Antigua ? The rebirth of the serial marchers could be coming if government fails to consider a commission of inquiry into the fencing of sports complexes around Antigua & Barbuda.
?Minister of Helps? Eugene Humphreys said he will be seeking permission from Commissioner of Police Vere Browne to take his action to the streets and press for an inquiry into the controversial fencing project.
Pre-empting the delivery of his written application, Humphreys said Browne will have the letter on his desk by the close of today.
Having been ignored by Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer, Humphreys said he has been forced to take his action to the streets, after giving the PM an August 24 deadline to respond to the opposition leader?s call for an inquiry.
?It was asked by the Prime Minister if he received that letter and his response was ?yes,? and the answer to the follow-up question was that he was a busy man ? ?I will do it in my time,? and I find that was very rude of the PM. Lester is the loyal opposition. What is Spencer showing to the youths of this country?? Humphreys said.
The tentative date for the march is September 29.
?We are hitting the streets, once we get permission from the commissioner, so we can force an inquiry into the fencing that took place all around Antigua with our monies that were wasted. I have the pep in me to call the people out and I am begging Mr Spencer to do the right thing,? Humphreys said.
?I?m taking on the charge to call the people. I have spoken with UPP supporters and some are ashamed and disgusted at the behaviour of the prime minister.?
Government recently revealed that a probe had showed no wrong-doing as is being alleged, but did admit that some of the contracts for the fencing and sporting projects were overvalued.
