Business Consulting | How to Hire Employees ? The Right Employees!

Home ?\? Business Consulting | How to Hire Employees ? The Right Employees! Business Consulting | How to Hire Employees ? The Right Employees!

Recently I was at a conference where I had the opportunity to hear Patrick V. Valtin the author of ?No Fail Hiring? speak about How to Hire Employees - The Right Employees. ? Even though I was at a marketing c0nference the best takeaway I had from the event was the information that Patrick gave.? I quickly read his book and then had my operations manager who is in charge of hiring for my company read it also.? I?d like to cover how what I heard and what I read was applied to my company.? It created drastic change and a healthy dose of self examination but I believe it was all for the better.

First off I have to say.. go buy his book!? No Fail Hiring

I?ve been responsible for hiring staff for companies for over 10 years.? I?ve probably interviewed well over 2500 people in those 10 years.? I never received formal training in the practice so most of what I?ve done has been trial and error.? There are two things that I?ve implemented since meeting Patrick Valtin and I will outline them for you now.

Internal Hiring Practice Examination: In this I took my hiring practices and needs and did a self evaluation of the internal operations of my company.? This was an examination of our hiring practices from every perspective.

This started with better job descriptions for all positions inside the company.?? If I?m going to look to hire people to fill positions inside my company I better know what I expect from the person.? I did this for every single employee in the company.? I started by letting them write their own job descriptions and then I spent time editing them to meet my expectations.? This gave me a clearer understanding of what my staff does and what they think they are supposed to do.? This led to the next step in my internal examination.

After reviewing our internal job descriptions I was now better prepared to write our help wanted ads.? With a clearer understanding of what each positions responsibilities are I was able to write more detailed job descriptions which helps to find more qualified candidates.

Then I moved on to the next piece of major examination.

External Examination of How to Hire Employees.

I took the time to look at our overall hiring process and how we communicated with the people that came to apply for jobs.? This started by find a new basic application.? I wanted a straight forward application that covered everything from references, to previous employers, to even covering us for government regulation of hiring practices.? I revamped out background check system to be in complete compliance with the federal government.? I created a cover sheet for each applicant that outlined our entire hiring practice in detail so that every person that applied was aware of our practices.? I then sat down with my current staff to go over everything to make it user friendly.

I?m writing this post today because we are in the midst of hiring four new team members this week to help with our expansion and I?m seeing the changes we made being used.? I?m amazed at how different the whole process is.? There isn?t the same stress level in our decision making process that used to be there.? I?m not so worried about trying to figure out or guess which person is the right person to hire.

I have seen a few things we still need to work on.? My Operations Manager came into my office yesterday and told me he had a ?gut feeling? that he had the right person.? For the first time I told him to have that person complete the entire interview process just like everyone else would and if in the end they are still the best candidate then we will hire them.? It was a shock to him but it was a comfort to me.

The views of this post are not those of Patrick Valtin but I must credit him with getting me to think about and react to the elements of my hiring process that we sub-par.? I have significantly more confidence in my hiring practices after meeting him and reading his book.
